The return air filter should be cleaned every 3 months. An easy way to remember this is to clean it at the change of every season – just like the fire brigade recommends you do with smoke alarms – summer, autumn, winter and spring. After the new energy labeling standards came into force on 1 April 2010, the star rating of air conditioners is determined from the Annual Energy Efficiency Ratio (AEER) for cooling and the Annual Coefficient of Performance (ACOP) for heating. The AEER and ACOP are defined as the annual operative energy output divided by the sum of annual operative and non-operative energy inputs. Non-operative energy input is defined and determined in accordance to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3823.2:2009. The Star Rating Index is calculated on tested values for energy and capacity, rather than the nameplate or rated values.
Typically, the AEER and ACOP are in the range 2.75 to 4.5 (meaning that the cooling or heating output is 2.75 to 4.5 times as great as the electricity input, or an efficiency of 275% to 450%). This is achieved by the use of a refrigeration heat pump, which collects internal heat and moves it outside when in cooling mode, or collects ambient heat from outside and moves it inside when in heating mode. The apparent efficiency of heat pumps is high as they can move much more low-grade energy in the form of heat than they require as electrical power input.
The star rating for air conditioners is determined from the tested AEER and ACOP. For both heating and cooling, 1 star corresponds to an ACOP or AEER of 2.75, with an extra star for an increase of 0.50 (www.energyrating.gov.au).
