FAQs

CAN I HEAT OR COOL ONLY THOSE PARTS OF MY HOME THAT I WANT?

Your ducted system can be designed to provide perfect climate control throughout your home. We can use zoning in your system’s design to have the flexibility to heat or cool the main living areas only during the day and the bedrooms by night or another combination to suit your needs. This helps to make your system extremely energy efficient if you don’t need to heat/cool your entire home at one time. The size of each zone is only limited by the size of your air conditioning system.

DOES MY AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM REQUIRE SERVICING?

For residential installations a service at least once a year is generally enough and yes-regular servicing checks will keep your system operating at maximum efficiency, minimizing overall running costs. Larger commercial systems need to be serviced more frequently, every 2-3 months.

A maintenance service would include checking and fixing the

  • Filters – cleaned or replaced as required.
  • Gas charges checked. If these are not correct the system will not work efficiently or effectively.
  • Electrical connections, motors and compressors – checked
  • Drains – cleaned and checked

Regular maintenance and servicing increases the life expectancy of the system as well as maintaining the system’s efficiency. To see in more detail what our maintenance service covers, please visit our website.

HOW ENERGY EFFICIENT ARE THE SYSTEMS WE INSTALL?

We use some of the highest energy efficiency rated products, which means the system is the most energy efficient one available at the time of installation. You can rest assured knowing your system will not only cool and heat your home it will also help you save money in the long term. Say goodbye to those high Energy Bills.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO INSTALL MY AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM?

Generally, less than a day for a split wall console type system and 1-2 days for a fully ducted air conditioning or gas heating system but we will ensure you are fully informed of the installation time, prior to your committing to the installation.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RUN?

Ducted reverse cycle air conditioning is the most energy efficient method of heating or cooling your home. Running costs are strongly influenced by the size of the system installed and how long it is running. A system that is correctly sized to cool or heat your home will be significantly less expensive to operate than one that is the wrong size, and so will result in less costly power bills. We always make sure you are fully informed about the running costs before you make any decision to install a system from Gaff Air.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO KEEP THE SYSTEM WORKING EFFICIENTLY?

The return air filter should be cleaned every 3 months. An easy way to remember this is to clean it at the change of every season – just like the fire brigade recommends you do with smoke alarms – summer, autumn, winter and spring. Removing the return air grille, taking it outside and hosing it can clean the filter. We will show you how to do this when the system is installed.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

The cost will depend on what you want and the final design, but our focus is on always delivering the best quality system within your budget so your ongoing costs are minimized. As a guide, most home reverse cycle; ducted systems are in the $5,000 to $15,000 price bracket depending on the size of your home.

WHAT GUARANTEES DOES GAFF AIR OFFER?

As we use only the best quality products from well-known manufacturers and ensure all our installation work meets or exceeds Australian Industry Standards, we offer a 10-year guarantee (conditions apply) on our installation and the manufacturers offer a 5-year warranty on their products.

We also ensure that after installation we leave your home clean and take away all packing materials. We will give a full operation demonstration once the system is installed so you can then ‘set and forget’. We also guarantee that if your system does not deliver the temperature range originally agreed, we will return to service and adjust the system so that it does.

We recommend regular maintenance of your new investment to ensure that both the manufacturer’s warranty and Gaff Air 10 Year Installation Warranty remain valid. This would entail a yearly service with Gaff Air

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY SYSTEM BREAKS DOWN?

In the unlikely event of your system breaking down, Gaff Air will guarantee to have one of our Technicians there within 72 hours. Our technicians are fully qualified and will be able to find a solution to the problem quickly and efficiently as they are trained in our installation processes. Gaff Air takes pride in the fact we have our own staff and employ local people.

WHAT HEATING & COOLING SYSTEM WOULD BE THE BEST FOR US?

Fully ducted, reverse cycle air conditioning is the best solution in almost all cases, as it gives you total control of the climate within your home. The major benefits of installing ducted air conditioning are that:

  • Every room can be the temperature you want, summer or winter. Your home is the temperature you want, when you want it, whether getting up in the morning or when you get home from work.
  • You can heat or cool just the part of the house you want to, through zoning, making the system very flexible and economical.
  • There are no hot or cold spots because the air is distributed evenly.
  • The grilles/vents and control panel are the only visible signs. No ugly units mounted on the wall.
  • Noise is kept to a minimum by using the best equipment and by locating any noise producing equipment in either the ceiling or outside the house. Ducted air conditioning is the quietest option.
  • A good quality heating and cooling system will add value to your home.
What is an Inverter?

Through new advanced technology, Inverter air conditioners are more economical to operate and quieter to run than conventional units. They can handle greater extremes in temperature, are smoother and more stable in operation and reach the desired temperature more quickly than conventional air conditioners.

What is EER Rating?

After the new energy labeling standards came into force on 1 April 2010, the star rating of air conditioners is determined from the Annual Energy Efficiency Ratio (AEER) for cooling and the Annual Coefficient of Performance (ACOP) for heating. The AEER and ACOP are defined as the annual operative energy output divided by the sum of annual operative and non-operative energy inputs. Non-operative energy input is defined and determined in accordance to the Australian Standard AS/NZS 3823.2:2009. The Star Rating Index is calculated on tested values for energy and capacity, rather than the nameplate or rated values.

Typically, the AEER and ACOP are in the range 2.75 to 4.5 (meaning that the cooling or heating output is 2.75 to 4.5 times as great as the electricity input, or an efficiency of 275% to 450%). This is achieved by the use of a refrigeration heat pump, which collects internal heat and moves it outside when in cooling mode, or collects ambient heat from outside and moves it inside when in heating mode. The apparent efficiency of heat pumps is high as they can move much more low-grade energy in the form of heat than they require as electrical power input.

The star rating for air conditioners is determined from the tested AEER and ACOP. For both heating and cooling, 1 star corresponds to an ACOP or AEER of 2.75, with an extra star for an increase of 0.50 (www.energyrating.gov.au).

What is MEPS?

Improving the energy efficiency of appliances and products in all sectors (residential, commercial and industrial) has significant economic and environmental benefits for Australia and New Zealand. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy demand in both countries, helps save consumers and businesses on running costs over the life of the products they choose to use.

The main policy tools used to achieve reductions in energy use from these products are mandatory Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Energy Rating Labels (ERLs) – the familiar star labels that have compared a range of electrical goods for twenty five years. These policies are implemented through a collaborative initiative called the Equipment Energy Efficiency Program (E3) involving representatives drawn from all jurisdictions in Australia and New Zealand.
